Onimusha: Way of the Sword PS5 Demo
Updated
Short answer
The PS5 demo is free on the PlayStation Store and runs about 30 minutes, covering the story prologue and the Ganryu encounter. It has its own product page labelled as the PS5 version, so you can download it without owning the full game.
Progress cannot be transferred to the full release. Keeping the demo save file is what matters: it grants the Kubi Akari charm when you play the full game.

How to download it
The demo is listed as a separate free product on the PlayStation Store and is marked as the PS5 version. Adding it to your library works the same way as any free title, and no pre-order is required.
The full PlayStation game page also lists the free demo in its Editions section, which makes it easy to move from the demo to a purchase once you have decided.
What you play
The demo opens the story and moves through several fights before the duel with Ganryu. That fight is the real test of whether the deflect-and-counter rhythm suits you.
The official PlayStation demo trailer from June 2026 shows the same opening area and combat, so you can preview the content before downloading roughly a gigabyte of it.
The Kubi Akari charm
The reward is tied to the presence of a demo save file, not to finishing the demo perfectly. Play it, let it save, and leave the save in place until you have launched the full game.
This reward is separate from pre-order bonuses. It is free to anyone who plays the demo, whether or not they pre-order any edition.
How it runs on PS5 and PS5 Pro
Digital Foundry's analysis of the demo described a rock-solid 30 FPS quality mode plus a strong high-frame-rate option, and examined PS5 Pro ray tracing and PSSR. Their video timeline walks through settings, Pro ray tracing, PSSR and performance testing.
All of those measurements come from the demo build. Launch patches can change performance, so use them as a guide to how the game behaves rather than as final numbers.
What the demo does not tell you
Difficulty in the demo is not the final tuning. Capcom publicly acknowledged feedback that the demo felt too easy and said it was confident players would be satisfied with the difficulty of the finished game.
Nor does the demo indicate campaign length or structure. Third-party estimates put the main story at roughly 20 hours, which the 30-minute slice cannot convey.
After the demo
If the combat clicked, the PlayStation game page lists Standard, Deluxe and Premium Deluxe so you can compare what each adds before buying. The US standard edition is $69.99.
If it did not, that is a useful result too — reviews consistently praise the swordplay but flag repetitive side content, so the demo is a fair sample of what the game asks of you.
Demo settings worth checking
The demo exposes the same graphics options split as the full game, so it is a good moment to decide between a stable 30 FPS quality mode and the high-frame-rate option. For timing-based combat, most players prefer the higher frame rate.
On PS5 Pro the analysis covered ray tracing and PSSR, which change image quality more than they change feel. Try both and settle on the one where deflect inputs read most clearly to you.
DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers are active in the demo as well, so you can judge whether the controller feedback suits you before buying.
Practise these before the full game
Spend the half hour learning the defensive core rather than rushing to the end: deflect, parry, Issen counters and soul absorption. A tips video covering projectile blocking, the parry-versus-deflect distinction and dodging is a useful companion, and it discloses a paid promotion with Capcom.
Ganryu is the natural benchmark for whether the timing has clicked. Replaying that fight a few times costs nothing and pays off directly in the opening hours of the campaign.
Progress resets, but muscle memory does not. Arriving at launch already comfortable with the rhythm is the practical benefit of the demo.
Moving from demo to full game
Leave the demo installed until you have launched the full game at least once, so the Kubi Akari charm can be granted from the save file. Reinstalling later is not guaranteed to recreate the same save.
The full PlayStation game page lists Standard at $69.99, Deluxe at $79.99 and Premium Deluxe above it. The higher tiers add charms, skins, outfits and a soundtrack rather than story content.
Digital pre-order rewards became a time-limited Early Adopter Bonus after the release date moved forward, so check the store page for the current deadline if a bonus factors into your purchase.
How big a sample is 30 minutes?
It is a small fraction of a campaign that runs roughly 20 hours on the main path and 25 to 35 with exploration. What it does cover is the moment-to-moment combat, which is the part that determines whether you will enjoy the rest.
It cannot show the pacing problems reviewers describe in the middle of the campaign, or the post-game structure of New Game Plus, Carnage and Boss Rematch.
Pair it with one review for the parts a demo cannot express, and you have a fairly complete picture before spending anything.
Common questions about the PS5 demo
It is free and requires no pre-order. Progress does not carry over, and the only thing that transfers is the Kubi Akari charm tied to the save file.
There is no Switch 2 demo, and the PC demo on Steam offers the same content. Choosing where to play the demo is therefore just a question of which machine you have.
Where the demo details come from
The roughly 30-minute length, the lack of progress transfer and the Kubi Akari save reward are all stated in the PlayStation Blog announcement of the demo. The demo itself has a dedicated free product page on the PlayStation Store.
Performance observations come from Digital Foundry analysis of the demo build, covering the 30 FPS quality mode, the high frame-rate option and PS5 Pro features.
The September 25 date in the original blog post is outdated; the game released on September 4, 2026.
